故事发生于1939年。在德国肆无忌惮地入侵捷克斯洛伐克之后，捷克外交官扬·马萨里克逃到了美国。信心和意志遭受严重打击的马萨里克躲进了一家精神病院，和活下去的意志作着斗争。在德国精神科专家施泰因医生的帮助下，马萨里克逐渐康复。为了阻止第二次世界大战的爆发，他进行了一系列外交抗争。然而二战最终还是爆发了，马萨里克为了解决内忧外患，仍然奋战在台前。
Plot Summary:It is 1939. Flamboyant Czech diplomat Jan Masaryk has fled to America to escape his recent past. Germany has invaded Czechoslovakia and Masaryk is now a man with no nation. In America he tries to forget the personal and political betrayal he and his country have suffered but these events shadow his every step. As the Czechoslovak ambassador in London, Masaryk failed to win the support of the British and could not avert the ruination of his country. With the help of Dr. Stein, an emigre German psychiatrist, and the beautiful writer Marcia Davenport, Masaryk tries to overcome his demons and re-live the dramatic events leading to the outbreak of the second world war.
