Jackson 饰）是一个失意的黑人商贩，为了能获得孩子的抚养权，他费力地争取到了房屋贷款。在酗酒者分享会上，滴酒不沾的他难掩心中的欢喜，言辞激动。凯文（本•阿弗莱克 Ben Affleck 饰）是一家艺术品基金会的白人律师，他曾经帮助某富豪做过慈善捐助工作。但当老人死后，他却在上司的授意下，接连清洗了基金会的老成员，此举被老人的继承人视为背叛，一纸诉状将其告上法庭。 正在此时，一场车祸让都勒和凯文相遇。因为拿错了对方的文件，两人的命运发生了改变。因为错过了约会的时间，都勒的孩子被判由妻子抚养，从此父子难得见面。而凯文也在法庭上被逼上了绝路，陷入了信任危机。这时，两人才发现彼此的对抗只会让事情更糟，但是化敌为友的路途却荆棘丛生……
